A Safari-kind-of-day!


Yesterday my 7 year old first grader excitedly announced as soon as she saw me after school “Mom!  We have to go shopping!  Tomorrow is Safari Day and I need to dress up!”

My first thought:  Hmmmm…. True to form, she is definitely a girl!  Any excuse to go shopping and she is all over it!

Second thought:  She is so cute!  She is totally into her school activities and you know, she would ROCK a Safari outfit.  OK!  Let’s go shopping! (I seriously heard the trumpet call in my mind!)

So I respond, “Okay, we’ll go shopping later, let’s go look up on the Internet what kind of outfits people going on safari wear.  I bet we can find you some khaki shorts!    Oh!  And you already have that hat…”

Later that evening we head to Target and find an outfit that will work for tomorrow's festivities; a hat, khaki shorts, denim vest.  She decided to use her brother’s hiking boots that he outgrew and our camping binoculars as an accessory.  She goes to bed that night with anticipation swelling in her 7 year old mind and dreams of safari-exploring through the wild grasses of Africa.

When I awoke this morning she was in full character, dressed for the day. 

And that’s when it hit me.  The pure innocence and sheer imagination of the child’s mind.
Sure, she may think she is going on a Safari to explore all the different animals that her fellow classmates researched for their end of the year project.  A make-believe adventure.  But in her spirit she was also approaching the day as in the true definition of a Safari:  A journey or expedition as stated by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.  It goes on to define:
A journey: something suggesting travel or passage from one place to another <the journey from youth to maturity>

An expedition: a journey or excursion undertaken for a specific purpose.

What if I woke up every day and made it a Safari-kind-of-day?  What if I woke up any day and made it a Safari-kind-of-day?  Planned and lived each day as a journey undertaken for a specific purpose...  

Maybe I don’t need to dress the part like my daughter did, but act it… indeed!

I want to make it a Safari-kind-of-day!

    Oh yes girl! We ALL should make every day a Safari-kind-of-day! Look at that cute babygirl!

This Can’t Be You…

I have been attending my Christian Writing/Editing Group bi-weekly for roughly two years now.   For the same amount of time I have been slowly but surely chipping away on my first book, a Memoir.   Some of the chapters are extremely telling and memories that I don’t really want to remember let alone share with others.    But they are my stories and they need to be told… so the reader can know me, relate to me and hopefully heal with me.   I read one of those uncomfortable chapters last week aloud in my group.   Chapter 3 - which should give you a pretty good idea about how long I have been holding this one back.   I have been waiting until I feel safe.   I have been waiting to see if my writing is “good enough”.   I have been waiting for someone to tell me to stop writing because it’s not good, so I don’t have to read the hard ones.   But this hasn’t happened.   So I keep writing, I keep attending and I keep reading. The Power of a Mother's Love
